How a 3-bullet email closes deals faster than a discovery call
UX Strategist, System Designer, Founder
"Subject: Quick chat?"
This email subject line is responsible for thousands of hours of unpaid consulting. You agree to a 30-minute discovery call, spend the time diagnosing their problem, and give them the exact roadmap they need. Then, they take your roadmap, say "let me think about it," and hand the execution to a cheaper internal hire.
You traded your expertise for a vague promise.
When you sell custom services, you invite clients to negotiate every line item of your process. When you sell a packaged product, the negotiation ends before it begins. This requires shifting from a custom proposal to a Productized Pitch.
The anatomy of a 15-second pitch
Busy founders do not read 10-page PDFs. They scan emails on their phones between meetings. Your pitch needs to be readable in 15 seconds and force a binary decision.
Drop the lengthy introductions. Use three bullets:
- The specific friction
Name the exact operational bleed you see.
"I saw your team is manually exporting CSVs from Stripe every Friday." - The bounded fix
State exactly what you will deliver, constrained by time or output.
"I will build an automated Zapier workflow that pushes this data directly into your Notion dashboard." - The fixed fee and CTA
Give the price and a low-friction next step.
"Fixed fee is $800. Takes me 3 days. Reply 'send' and I’ll forward the agreement link. If not, no worries."
Killing the discovery call
Notice what is missing: the request for a meeting.
You are not asking for 30 minutes of their time. You are offering a clear, bounded solution to a specific problem. If they reply "send," you use your standardized agreement link (which includes the scope and deposit requirement).
If they reply, "Can we jump on a call to discuss?" you have a choice. You can either charge for that call as a paid diagnostic, or you can politely decline and state that the scope is fully outlined in the agreement.
Your next step
Shifting from open-ended discovery calls to fixed-scope pitches reclaims your time and instantly filters out clients who want free advice.
