Presenting a single price on a proposal creates immediate friction. The client is forced into a binary decision. They either accept your number or reject it entirely. There is no middle ground for negotiation.

Presenting too many options creates decision paralysis. They spend their mental energy comparing features instead of evaluating the value.

You need to guide their decision using architectural design.

The decoy pricing tier

A three tier pricing strategy removes the binary trap. By structuring your options strategically, you make your target offer look like the most logical choice on the page.

The human brain struggles to evaluate absolute value. We understand value by comparing things relative to each other. You can use this psychological baseline to steer clients toward your most profitable package.

The three tier architecture

Structure your pricing page or proposal appendix using this exact layout.

  1. The anchor tier
This is your premium option. It includes everything you offer plus high touch support and rapid turnaround. Price it significantly higher than your target. Its primary job is not to be sold. Its job is to make your target tier look reasonably priced by comparison.
  2. The target tier
This is the package you actually want them to buy. It solves their core problem completely. Price it comfortably below the anchor. Include all the essential deliverables they need, but remove the luxury add ons from the premium tier.
  3. The comparison tier
This is your basic option. It is priced just slightly below your target tier, but it lacks one critical component required to solve their main problem. When they compare the comparison tier to the target tier, the missing piece makes the target tier feel like the only complete solution.

Structuring a decoy pricing tier is the most effective way to increase your average project value without increasing your sales friction.
